Children and Youth PROGRAMS

Our goal for children and youth is to help them know without any
doubt that
God loves them extravagantly and
to light the lamp of
faith in their hearts that will last and grow throughout their lives.

Children Infant through Pre-School: Nursery and child care is provided during both Sunday worship services (from 7:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Sunday mornings) for infants and children through pre-school age, and all children are also welcome to remain with their parents in the worship services too. Children receive excellent care from our nursery staff, and have a "curriculum" of color and play that teaches them about God's great love for them.

Children Kindergarten through 5th gradeSunday school classes for children in Kindergarten through 5th grades are scheduled from 9:30 – 10:30 am.  Teachers and their assistants gather the children in the Fellowship Hall, then go upstairs to the Children’s Wing to start the hour as a whole group with a short music time with Kim and Carol, then Sacred Space time. After these whole group activities, they split into two classes, K-3rd grades and 4th-5th grades.
With committed and talented teachers and age-appropriate curriculum, children learn through Bible study and a variety of creative arts, games, drama and crafts.  Service and mission projects round out a program that encourages the spiritual growth and faith development of each child.  Parents are encouraged to take an active part of their child’s faith journey.  Our Christian Education program, whether for adults of children, is guided by the belief that God’s gracious love and care is for each and all and that God wishes to delight in each and every human being.

 Children and Worship

At First Christian, children of all ages are very welcome at all worship services. A nursery is available for children through age 5 who need more active options, and there are also children’s books and a rocking chair in the Parlor across from the Sanctuary in case a young child needs some time apart from worship for a few minutes.
Parents and caregivers can help children participate in the worship service by helping them follow along with the bulletin and songs. They are also encouraged to softly answer any questions children may have. Other worshipers around you will delight in seeing and hearing a child engaged in worshiping God! The Children’s Moment portion of the service is geared specifically for children, as they are invited to come to the front of the Sanctuary to hear a short lesson. After the Children’s Moment they can take their seat with their parents or caretakers.
It is also helpful for children to have their own worship service occasionally, in order to worship in a developmentally appropriate style and to learn more about the elements of worship. This “Children’s Church” time occurs on the first Sunday of every month. On that Sunday, children participate in the first part of the regular worship service in order to set their focus for their own worship, then go to Children’s Church.
It is vital for children and adults to share in worship together, so that children will understand and want to be in worship when they are older and are making decisions for themselves. Children learn the importance of worship by participating in it regularly, and adults are blessed by the presence of these young people as they worship God together.
